From the desk of Sharda Baker.

Hi and welcome everyone!

This is Sharda with another pet health newsletter update for you.

I'm not sure if you remember but a few months ago I released a newsletter about FOODS that can be TOXIC for your dogs. Now, these dog foods or foods rather can easily be seen in our homes and can mistaken to be edible my many dog owners because they are healthy for human consumption.

Honestly, after my newsletter about those dangerous dog items I have been flooded by emails asking if these certain food is bad or good.

So, to answer everyone's questions I dug deeper to provide everyone more bad dog food or dangerous dog foods for your dogs.

These food may look harmless but you will be surprised at what damage they can actually do to dog health. So let's start!

PET HEALTH : DANGEROUS DOG ITEMS / DOG FOODS

Let's start of with…

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #1: AVOCADOES

Avocadoes maybe perfectly healthy for humans but for dogs this certain fruits contain persin which can cause digestive upsets and heart problems for our dogs.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #2: BAKING POWDER AND BAKING SODA

Although this may not really be considered as food or dog food for that matter, baking powder and baking soda are common items found in the kitchen. They are both leavening agents, used in baked goods to create a gas, which causes doughs and batters to rise.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder combines baking soda with an acid of some kind, usually cream of tartar, sodium aluminum sulphate or calcium acid phosphate, or a combination of the three.

If your dog eats a large amount of either of these powders, he can suffer from electrolyte changes, muscle spasms and congestive heart failure. Keep baking soda and baking powder out of your dog's reach and in case that you spill some on the floor, clean it up immediately.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #3: BROCCOLI

We may ask our kids to finish up their broccoli but we can't actually say the same for our dogs. Although Broccoli once or twice a month can be ok for dogs feeding them too much broccoli can cause them illness.

Gastrointestinal upset is common in livestock that are fed broccoli in excess of 10 to 25 percent of the animal's diet. The same could be true for pets like dogs and cats.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #4: CORN ON THE COB

Corn on the cob maybe a delight for many but this can really be dangerous for our dogs. Even though the corn will be digested, chunks of cob may obstruct the digestive tract which can lead to all sorts of problems.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #5: LIVER

Feeding our dog live in large amounts can cause Vitamin A toxicity.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #6: NUTMEG

Nutmeg is actually a seasoning that causes tremors, seizures, and dog deaths so it is definitely a no no.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #7: RAW EGG WHITES

Raw egg whites contain avidin which causes B vitamin deficiency, skin problems and skeletal deformities. Raw eggs can also harbor salmonella or e.coli.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #8: GREASY, FATTY TABLE SCRAPS

These foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas caused when too much digestive enzyme is produced. Affected dogs may have bloody vomit or diarrhea and suffer dehydration and even death.

Snacks shared with your dog need to be checked for hidden ingredients. Some foods such as cookies, gravies, and even some baby foods, can contain chocolate, nuts, onions, excessive salt or sugar, or other items dangerous for dogs. Keeping garbage cans secured is a good idea too.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #9: PENNIES

Pennies are another danger to dogs worth mentioning. Those dated after 1981 are made from zinc with a thin copper coating. A dog swallowing just one of these pennies can suffer damage to red blood cells and kidney failure, due to zinc poisoning.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #10: FRUIT PITS AND SEEDS

Apple seeds, cherry pits, peach pits, and plum pits contain the toxin cyanide. Signs of cyanide poisoning include vomiting, heavy breathing, apnea tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, coma, skin irritation. In some cases, antidotes are available. Other treatments include oxygen therapy, fluids and supportive care.

Also take note that the leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #11: HUMAN VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS CONTAINING IRON

Remember everyone let's NOT play doctor when it comes to our dog's health. Before letting them ingest pet medications especially if it was meant for humans always consult with your vet first. Medications such as these can damage the lining of your dog's digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #12: PERSIMMONS

Persimmons can be bad for your dogs. Its seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #13: RHUBARB LEAVES

Rhubarb leaves contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #14: TOBACCO/CIGARETTES

I see some picture in the internet about dogs with cigarettes which I believe their owners think it may be cute but it can be extremely unhealthy and toxic for our dogs. They contain nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervous systems.

Ingestion can result in rapid heartbeat, collapse, coma, and even death so think twice when smoking some cigars if you're around your dogs or when you think it's cute to give them little cigars.

DANGEROUS DOG ITEM #15: YEAST DOUGH (UNBAKED BREAD)

Yeast dough can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

So, there you are! I really hope that you learned a lot from today's pet health newsletter update and that these answered your questions regarding your inquiries.

All the best and take care

Warmly,
