Vicki @ 9:38 am

Thanks for the opportunity to research dog food for my the very special members of our household. (King Charles). The breed seems to have very delicate digestive systems.

Ricco @ 10:47 am

I'm a finicky Cavvie on a raw diet, and although I'm very healthy & well-pampered, I'm an itchy pup (11mo) — what's a dog to do??

Christine Thomas @ 12:09 pm

Thankyou for all your help so far, as we have a girl called lottie she is only 14 weeks old and the tips you have given are great its over twenty years since we have had a dog so its all new to us at the momment.

Diane Yanosik @ 4:54 pm

Thanks for the free dog food e-book. I've only had a chance to glance at it - just read the toxins section in detail. I was disappointed not to see Xilatol. This is a sweetener in sugarless gums and in toothpastes, as well as some food products (Ice cream for one). This is highly toxic to dogs, as one piece of gum can kill a toy dog. Most people are unaware of this danger. I'm sure you will include it in any future editions. Thanks again!

Jade @ 5:49 pm

Sharda,
How would you rate the new "Halo" brand dog food? I switched my dog over to this brand about 3 months ago and she is doing great.

admin @ 6:08 pm

Hi Diane,

Yes, I am looking at Xilatol and it will be in the next update.

Thanks for your feedback.

I will be passing on more dog food information shortly.

best regards,

Sharda Baker

Ann @ 9:13 pm

I really appreciate your information. I have 2 beautiful bichon boys…Georgie 1 year and Eddie who will be a year next month. They are a joy! I am looking for any and all info that will help me make sure they are as healthy and happy as possible.

Rosie Hebert @ 9:28 pm

Hi
Just down loaded your report. I'm picking up my new
friend on Sunday, so this report came just in time.
I'm sure I will be referring to all of your news letters
often in the next little while.
Thanks

Janis @ 10:02 pm

Could you please list a few of the dog foods on the market that are good for my Bichons. I am currently feeding them Solid Gold (Lamb).

laura @ 11:10 pm

Can't wait to get my hands on this welcome dog food information. I have recently adopted a wonderful dog I've named Ginger. Since she came from a shelter with very little in the way of background information, I didn't know anything about her except that she is around seven or eight and was abandoned. It's so sad. Someone trained her once and trained her well. She is so special and has done much to fill the void left in my life from grieving my last dog who died of cancer. I hate to think that what I fed him, though vet recommended, might have contributed to his death. I have been feeding Ginger a food that is supposed to be all natural and everything. It's not from a grocery store or pet store and the company is small and family run. Still, I welcome any information I can get. It is very confusing trying to decide whether I need to start cooking for Ginger or what all this raw diet stuff is about and maybe I shouldn't feed her dry dog food anymore, no matter how natural and nutritious they say it is. (I have to admit, I was curious and ate a piece of it and I thought it tasted terrible!) So I thank you so much for the information and will continue to try to educate myself so that I may be a more well-informed and empowered pet guardian. Thanks for all the work you put into this report as well as your other products. Oh, and don't worry, Sharda. Everybody gets behind sometimes, especially us humans.

Pam klassen @ 12:11 am

My twelve year old Bichon has starting to reject all commercial dog foods, even the very expensive ones. I was given a recipe for making your own and she loves it. She was having a lot of digestive problems also and they have cleared up since I started her on my own.

Jeannette @ 1:37 am

Thank you for the information. I did not know that macademia nuts were bad for dogs.
My Poodle is on Science Diet per the Vets suggestion.
Does anyone know any information on Science Diet?
Thanks.

cindy @ 2:07 am

thank-you so much,I sent it to all my friends an family that have dogs.

Michelle Kennedy @ 2:30 am

Sharda,
I have been given a diet named B.A.R.F. I haven't the time just yet to fully explain, but I will in time. Have you heard of it? It is good for puppies and dogs in general vets recommend it. Life style your doggy can live a long healthy life. Sharda I appreciate your info and love you to continue to inform me from time to time. Kind regards Michelle.

Carolyne @ 2:50 am

I am travelling with my miniature poodle by boat, it is sometimes not easy to get proper food, for him. We are down under too at the moment, and unfortunately have to put up with quarantine to bring the dog into the country even though he is fully vaccinated. Humans travel freely with their diseases, whilst our poor dog has to spend 4 weeks in a cage to prevent what? He will not even be taken out for walks, or entertained for four weeks. What is the point of vaccines? Somebody should look into the money making racket made on the back of poor animals in the name of quarantine.

Terry @ 3:01 am

Hi sharda
I thought your Dog Food Report was quite informative. I have a Golden Retriever that has a liking to apples. Now that I know they are toxic I will not be giving him any more!!

Two years ago my 4 yr old pug had chronic hot spots, I have 8 dogs total and with chronic health problems my vet bills were high, I put them all on raw dog food and have had great results, my vet bills now are only annual wellness visits. I am looking forward to reading your article on dog food.

Kitty @ 5:43 am

Lilliana @ 5:52 am

Thank you very much for this free offer, Sharda!
I wish nothing but the best for my cutie (Ricky) He is very picky and spoiled with food. Often I have to feed him with my hand just to get him to eat. He is a mix of Pekingese and Pomeranian so he is my pekipo… :-)
Can’t wait to get your food information.
Sincerely
Lilliana

Mercia @ 6:01 am

I'm starting my three bichons on a natural raw diet in a couple of weeks. After doing some research, I'm hoping this will be the ticket in resolving some health issues that we're dealing with. I've always had them on high quality foods but they are still commercially processed and have grains. I found Darwin's Natural Pet food and looks like they might be on to something. We'll see. Looking forward to reading your report! Thanks!

jean morris @ 6:12 am

I have a beautiful westie bitch she is two years old called heidi she has had problems with her skin the vet suggested evening primrose oil capsules these seem to be doing the trick but your diet information would be a great help.

quarantine of pets.

I do look forward to the book as I've had two different bladder stone problems
with my dogs which has forced them on Science Diet's WD…

Lyndell @ 7:09 am

Thank you! I've made a note of nutrient levels required for top quality dog food. I have been using a reputable brand but will now compare that food with other brands.
A very informative list of dangerous substances. I didn't know grapes could be dangerous! Our kelpie and three labradors thank you too!

michelle @ 7:20 am

befor when we first spoke I had asked questions about a pug,but sence then I have given him to my sister and got my chuahau(not sure how to spell it,lol)back from my ex-husband,he is 5 years old now and the love of my life.So any helpful hints on how to make life better for my Dooley Rae would be great. Sincerly Michelle

Avis malloch @ 7:23 am

Have to feed one dog Wellness dog food with fish and sweet potato as has an allergy and the other dog purina Dog Chow. So glad to get all this information.

Sue @ 7:28 am

Thanks for the info….I have a cocker pup (6mos) & she is already starting to scratch…I had one with allergies, and would like to avoid them this time….We love her sooo much.

Lorris @ 7:32 am

Dear Sharda,

Your information was MOST HELPFUL!!! I have a toy poodle who is extremely finicky when it comes to eating. I make all his food….and I use a well balanced diet of vegetables and sweet potatoes with chicken that I blend and I mix this with a little cooked meat every day….so he gets his full amount of nutrients and veggies….I make him a whole grain fed chicken which I then cook with the veggies and the sweet potatoes and then I blend this and out it into ice cube trays. He gets one cube of this…sometimes two and then his meat that I cook..only high quality meat that is grilled or steamed or broiled. He chews his little chews that I buy so his teeth are good etc. But he is finicky and I will try your method of feeding him. Thanks. Lorris

Thomas Endicott @ 7:34 am

Most Miniature Schnauzers have a skin problem. I learned that the easiest ways to control it is to give my dog one fish oil capsule in peanut butter. He has yet to show any bumps or other skin issues.

Gail @ 7:44 am

So glad to hear again - I had the flu when you advertised your special months ago and when I attempted to contact you, your mailbox was full. Would really love to have all your ebooks and the price was right at that time.

Anyway, my sweet Toy, Buddy, has been very picky since we brought him home at 7 weeks. I can hardly wait to see the information on food. We all do so want to feed our little ones the correct food.

Thanks for all you do to inform us! Gail

Kim Schichtel @ 7:46 am

I found the dog food report very informative, however, would have liked a little more information about which commercial dog foods are better than others. It's still confusing trying to figure out which ones are the healthiest for my dog. Do you have a report or a website that rates commerical dog foods on nutrition?

Judith @ 7:46 am

Kellie came from the lost dog home at one year old and lived on Eukanuba for the five years she spent with us. We lost her last August to renal failure. I was devasted and searched the net and found lots of write-ups pointing a finger at the dog food I used; one describing the exact condition Kellie went through in her last days.

Can you tell me if there is any truth in euthanised animals used in the dog food?

Barb Arsenault @ 7:55 am

Thank you for this amazing info.. I have my yorkies on Wellness dog food. I was really interested in the part on what is dangerous to our beloved pets..

William Gunkel @ 7:55 am

Natural food is the way to go for our pets that we love so much. I have owned 4 french bulldogs and one Boston Terrier. My daughter has 2 English bulldogs. After $3,000.00 of tests it all came down to food. I like the Fish and Sweet potato diet without all the fillers, animal byproducts, corn etc. It will stop the itch, give them a smooth coat and improves their digestion system. Just remember as all things are not for all people so it is also true for our pets.

Suzanne @ 7:57 am

Good info, but since the dog food recall, I had already read most of this by researching myself. I want someone to put out a list of "safe" dog foods so we can easily decide which ones to stear clear of. The labels on a lot of these dog foods are disguised into making you think they are the best…..thanks for all of your hard work.

Andrea Smith @ 7:59 am

Thank you. I am looking for a healthy diet for my scottie.

Barb Arsenault @ 8:01 am

Thank you for the free information.. I am listening to it right now.. I have my yorkie boys on Wellness dog food. They are my world and I want the best for them.. Very interested in all the things that are dangerous to our pets.. Thank you again for this valuable information…

Debbie King @ 8:13 am

Thank you so much Sharda. I can't afford to buy too much right now as we are getting ready to move due to Eminant Domain so I truly appreciate this report.

Ann Strauch @ 8:14 am

My vet recommends Science Diet, and my dog seems to like it and thrive on it. Do you have any info. that I should know about SC?

robert @ 8:20 am

I have enjoyed all your info since buying your first book and I am looking forward to reading about your food report
Thanks
Bob

Janis @ 8:26 am

Thank you for all of your information. Most of the data was very good for a first time Yorkie moma like me. The Eukanuba food is responsible I believe for my losing Max, my miniature dachshund. At his last well treatment at the vet, my then vet told me I took such good care of him, he should live to 17. He died a month later at only seven years old. The necropsy showed liver, spleen and renal damage.

Deborah @ 8:34 am

I will be getting my yorkshire terrier next month and the info that I have been getting from you has helped me a lot in preparing for him. Thanks.

Grace @ 8:56 am

Hi Shadra,

Thank you so much for the information on dog food. I did know that raisins and grapes were not to be fed to dogs but I didn't know about apples. My 2 poodles love fruit. They eat bananas, bits of apple, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Guess after reading this, no more apples.

michelle a wood @ 9:12 am

thank you for the download. it was very helpful. Sincerly, Michelle Wood

smiles @ 9:17 am

Thank you so much for the information to help me protect my two female Papillions.. 1 and 3 y/o…
They are the light of my life.. and thanks to your

for my beasty girls..

Thank you again for all you information..

wayne @ 9:20 am

hi Sharda
thanks for thr download on dog food, found it very informative. we have a four year old Boston terrier that rules our household. we will use your info to try and keep her as healthy and happy as possible

Ginga Smithfield @ 9:21 am

Dear Sharda,

Thank you so much for sending along your ebook. I will be extremely careful the next time I give my Danny Boy bits of apple. He loves apple. Also, I want to thank you for offering this book "Free." That, alone, tells me you only have all dogs best interest at heart. Danny Boy is my little Black and White Cocker and he has Auto Immune Disease. He almost died from this horrible disease when he was 3 years old. However, with wonderful veterinarians and a lot of tender loving care from me, he is now 8 years old. He does extremely well considering his health problems. I love him so much and that is why I am constantly looking for reliable information concerning his health. Thank you again for being someone I can rely on.

Ginga

wayne @ 9:22 am

very informative, will use your info to keep our beautiful Boston female (Mimi)as healthy and happy as we can

Gloria Needham @ 9:23 am

Hi, Sharda,
thanks for all your info and emails. I have two Yorkies–ages 1 (Button) and 4 (Banditt). Banditt weighs 17 lbs–had pancreatitis 3 months ago. He is off all table scraps and the vet recommended boiled and rinsed hamburger meat and white rice. We've continued to give both Yorkies about a cup of this mixture each morning and they seem to be doing well.

Banditt was put on their Hill's Prescription Diet w/d (high in fiber. I found the Wellness Reduced fat formula and wondered if it would be okay to switch Banditt to this food? They don't seem to like it as well.
Thanks so much for all you do.
Gloria

CATHERINE SKEITH @ 9:23 am

Thank you so much for your dog food dangers information
i found it so interesting.I have a Lhasa apso puppy of
8 months old and she is into everything, even my plants in the garden, and loves fruit.I will be extra vigilant
from now on. Thanks once again Shadra

Jean Fazel @ 9:24 am

Good Morning Sharda,

I have been reading your News Letters for some time now.
Joan Palmer has been forwarding them to me. I have a 3 year Bishon that is the love of my life. I am looking forward to reading your book.

Thank you
Jean

Andrea @ 9:24 am

Hi Sharda:

I read the report on Dog Food. A lot of those things I already knew, some I didn't, so it will be helpful for my next dog. I lost my Benny (almost 11 years old) back in January to what I am almost positive were food related/allergic diseases. Like many people - I am sure I loved him to death. I periodically search the internet now looking for what might be a good food or foods to feed my next westy. What would be helpful to me and maybe for others would be a listing of acceptable foods to buy. OR if that would put you in a legal bind - how about a printable list of what should be contained with percentages thereof?

I saw someone above who has a westy with skin problems. That's how Benny started at around 5 years old. It got progressively worse, attacking the liver and intestines. I found that the food is so very important. Continue to do your good works! We all appreciate you!

Thanks!
Andrea

sandy simpson @ 9:31 am

Thanks Sharda for your concern about dogfood. I had a poodle with terrible skin disease and the only food that cleared her up was Natures Receipe Venison. Now I feed this to my Yorkies and Poodles and have not had any problems. Pass this along to anyone having skin problems with their dogs. Alot of times it is food related, just like you have studied. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
Thanks again for happy healthy dogs!
Sandy

Kathryn Henderson @ 9:31 am

Thank you so much for sending this. We have a Toy poodle that is so special too us. I took her off of dog food over a year ago. We feed her skinless chicken breast. Some raw veggies and few fresh fruits.
Have a great day.

Kitza... @ 9:33 am

Thank you so much! I am a new owner of 2 toy poodles and it has been a battle over food from the very beginning. This report was very helpful to my family. Please send help on what is the best dog food for poodles. Thanks again,

Marcia @ 9:45 am

Hi Sharda,
I have a 2 year old Westie that has been very sluggish
and sleepy for a couple months now. Her hair is also thin.
She will only eat Cesar's or people food. Please help. Is this normal for westies?

Jennifer Barbour @ 9:48 am

Thank you so much for the report a lot of great information. I have two cockers and they are very special to me. My daughter tells me all the time I love them more then her (ha ha). Anything to help them stay with me longer is a god send. Thanks again for this and all the information you make available to us. Keep up the great work.

Suzanne @ 9:59 am

My 8 month old Morkie loves apples. I did not know that they were toxic. Why are they toxic? I've given only a few small bites to him while I eat my apple.

Wendy @ 10:04 am

Science Diet (unless prescription formula for a medical condition) in my opinion is one of the worst foods out there. Up until recently, they put peanut hulls in their light formula! You will also notice it full of soy….a cheap ingredient that you will find in a lot of the cheap grocery store foods. Science Diet is owned by Colgate Palmolive, not veterarians like the name implies. Years ago in the 80's it was better before the company was sold….now, you're wasting your money. Dog Chow is similar in ingredients and 1/2 the price….if you want to feed a cheap quality food, at least save some money in doing so.

sandy simpson @ 10:15 am

Thanks Sharda for helping take good care of dogs.

Herb Rankin @ 10:36 am

Sharda,
I was hoping this report would be different than the others that have been available over the internet. All these reports beat around the bush avoiding the answers we need; which brands are good and which are not. I know there are lots of brands out there and who has the time to test all of them? I am hoping your future reports will get down to the answers we need. I am sorry but so far, there is nothing new here. If you can, please tell us 2-4 commerical brands you would recommend.
Thanks,
Herb

Denise Coulbeck @ 10:47 am

In england BARF menas raw meat, raw carcass, raw veg, chicken wing tips, and as a family with a lot of knowledge about food between us, BARF we feel causes concern, the meat, carcass, needs to be VERY fresh and disease free, ( lung worm, salmonella, BSE to name but a few ) and I don not see how this can be guarateed. I know in the states one can buy allready made up frozen portions of raw meat and veg, is this what u are refering to? I have a giant dog ( russian black terrier ) and a lot of owners breeders go in for it. I do not

Diane @ 10:50 am

Thanks Sharda, another good topic. I knew about most of these dangerous items. I did learn about a few I didn't know are dangerous.
It's very hard to find good dog food, because one brand will have the proper percentages of one ingredient and not enough of another one or two ingredients.
I would love to see a list of recommended name brand dog food containing the proper percentages of ingredients.
Thanks,
Diane

Kimberly @ 10:56 am

Interesting thoughts. Never knew how many items out there in our world are toxic to dogs.
Thanks, again for the information.

Denise Coulbeck @ 10:59 am

A good one here in Uk is BURNS, it is just fish and rice, chicken and rice, venison and rice, no fillers or rubbish. And the company recomend feeding LESS, than you would expect, apparently most of us over feed our beloved pets, I have had my ginat 54KG, Russian Black Terrier on it for 3 months now, NOTHING else, I found it hard not to give treats, but he had severe colitus, proir to trying this food, and it has cleared up, he only has 420 grams. He is perfect weight, and doing well.

Gail @ 11:00 am

I hear schnauzers are very prone to bladder stones. Any ideas on how to avoid this??

Geni @ 11:07 am

I raise yokies and have researched lots of dog foods I would also like to find a site that lists and grades dog foods. I have been using Blue Buffalo do you know anything about them. it is a natural dog food with no by products, no corn, gloutin , soy or the bad fillers list whole meats first and veggies and fruits even the accidofilis ( sp) that stuff in yogarts and blueberries and lots of stuff I have seen in human diets but never in dog foods. please let me know your thoughts on this food, my vet was not receptive but he would not even check it out and he also sells science diet so he was no help.

Dorrie Anthony @ 11:08 am

This report will be very helpful to me I am sure. I have a 4-1/2 month old golden retriever and wish to make sure I am providing her with the proper nutrition.

Dorrie Anthony @ 11:09 am

Thank you so very much!

Rita @ 11:20 am

Hi, Sharda!
I am new to your downloads. Thanks so much for the free download about foods. I enjoyed the article and found it very helpful! I look forward to more of your articles! Last August we lost our beloved mini schnauzer of 15 years, Pepper. She had kidney disease. We just got a new little liver tan female mini schnauzer, Sasha. She is 14 weeks old. She is a joy, frustrating at times with the house breaking and nipping, but we are getting there. We love her a lot. She is filling a very empty spot in each of our hearts! Thanks again for the emails.

lisa fanzo @ 11:41 am

fish oil capsules in with food, olive oil, canola oil too.

Ronda @ 11:48 am

Thank you so much for giving access to this wonderful tool. Especially the different foods and how they can affect my baby.

Geni @ 11:55 am

Hi Sharda, other toxins I have heard of ore Rasins- dried grapes, and I just bought a Carolina Jasmine and found out that it and many other Jasmines are poisonous. who would of thought. thanks for your info I am sure many have been enlightened. Geni

Beverly Boisen @ 11:59 am

Hi Rita, Sorry to hear about your sweet Schnauzer.
I too lost our 15 yr.old Miniature Schnauzer 2 years ago to an anal infection.
One year later we purchased another miniature Schnauzer in the Birkshires, of MASS.
She was 10 WEEKS OLD and now she is a lively 13 month old, girl, named her Rosie.
I started her right away with the food on my website As I just signed up and she is doing wonderful.
The treats are healthy, etc.
If you send me your email adresse I will gladly show off her to you :-)
My vet says wow! What are you feeding her?
He sells dog food in his place of business, you know the norm:-(

Lori (Puppylove Express) @ 12:02 pm

Thanks for all the info,it has really helped alot with my babies…THANKS SO MUCH LORI

Nancy @ 12:05 pm

Saw where your vet recommended Science Diet. From all I have heard and read, Science Diet is one of the worst! Most people I knew would not put their dogs on this food. I worked in a pet store years ago in Denver, and I found out a lot about this food and how bad it can be for your dog.
My beautiful Collie just passed away a couple months ago. Dundee was 12 years old and the age for a Rough Collie is 11-13. However, I think had I put him on the holistic, Solid Gold food from Germany (it is the oldest of the Holistic foods), he may have lived a longer life. I immediately put my two cats on Solid Gold, all natural food. It is worth the money as the vet bills are very minimal, just their yearly checkup and shots, they are happy, healthy, their coats just shine and they have had absolutely no bladder problems. Anyway, just thought I would weigh in with my two cents. I do know Ellen Degeneres has a holistic food out too, Halo, and I'm sure it is just as good as Solid Gold. I know that if I am ever lucky enough to be a dog owner again I will definitely feed nothing but natural food to my beloved pet.

Clifford @ 12:06 pm

Thanks, I was told small amounts of garlic would keep bugs from biting my, dog, so it is toxic and not good for him. I will not give him any more garlic. Thanks again. Cliff

Joni B. @ 12:19 pm

Thank you for your report. We had a mini schnauzer for 7 yrs and had to put her down in January of 08. She developed bladder stones and the vet couldn't get one out that had been stuck in her uretha. We now have Mimi another mini schnauzer and I feed her Canidae dog food. She loves it and her weight is stable and we haven't noticed any problems like acne (prone to schnauzers). Thank you for your weekly up-dates on schnazers. I love them.

Judy @ 12:38 pm

Very Informative. I have a Westie, who has a very sensitive stomach - so don't feed her any table scraps except carrots and apples (and never knew they could trouble her). Thanks for the good information.

Elma @ 12:44 pm

I just read your report on proper dog foods. I was hoping to see some brand names of dog food and how you would rate them. I would also like to know if feeding my dog things as carrots is o.k. and which is better cooked or raw? What about all the doggie treats that are on the store shelves. Are they o.k to feed to my little Yorkie-Poo and which ones should be avoided? Right now I am giving him milk bone treats. Am I right in doing this?

Elma

Cindy @ 1:00 pm

Thank you for the great information on dog food. I did know some of the information but you can always learn more. I have a very sweet girl named Callie. She had a problem with bladder stones so we had to put her on a special diet through the vet. She seems to be doing great with that but we don't give her any table scraps. Just her usual food and dog treats. I notice one thing you don't address and I have always heard it was good for dogs coats and that is eggs. If so, what's the best way to fix them for them?
Thanks for your very informative information you provide.

Geneva @ 1:01 pm

I too was giving my Dandy apples with seeds(He loves apples) Thankfully I haven't given himn enough to hurt him and also I have given him some chicken/no skin and some fish from the table (He loves it) Thank you for enlightening me!!!

Caroline @ 1:02 pm

Loved the report, as it answered some questions I had reg. nutrition. Went to Petsmart, just now, to get different dog food (which I will add a little at a time to her regular food,to see how she tolerates it. I found, to my delight, Euksnuba has dog food made especially for yorkies–to maintain their skin and coat. How wonderful. That's what I was looking for.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the book. I really learned a lot. I have 2 papillons which I adopted. One is 10 one is 4 and I want to keep them as long as possible. We do feed them chicken once in a while and also an egg once in a while. We use dry food called Prairie dog food. The woman at the pet shop said it is good food and would be good for them. I hope so. Now I can check it with info you have given and I know now what they definitely cannot have. Thanks again.

Kathy Momoi @ 2:44 pm

Thanks Shandra,

Sharon @ 3:05 pm

I was looking more for names of dog foods. But the info on fruits, was interesting. I have received information from another site which actually names about 10 foods that are good and several that aren't so I was hoping to compare.

jenny @ 3:21 pm

thank you 4 the info. on dog food…but the only problem is ,is that I have no idea whta to feed my dogs. I have phoned many different vets, and they all recommend the "best" which is ALWAYS different then the other vets, and surprise surprise, they all tellme to buy what they sell. I need a opinion from someone who knows what they're talking about and that won't gain anything from telling me…someone who honestly just wants to help me. Iwould love to know what u feed ur dogs (the brand) I live in canada so I hope that it's available, I have a yorkie(of course) and a pappillion-pomeranian mix, they are both under 7 pounds..PLEASE help me,let me know what u feed your dogs, I just want to feed them good healthy food…I hope that u will let me know…..thank you!!

Hi Sharda, thank you very much for this wonderful info. on the dog food report. I lost my 15 1/2 yr. old mini Schnauzer 13 mon. ago from Diabetes, Addison's Disease she also had gone blind, and many yrs. of skin infections. If only I had known more about food products yrs. ago, her quality of life might have been better, I am sure it had to be the poor quality of dog food that had caused a lot of her problems. We now own a beautiful 13 1/2 mon. old mini Schnauzer, Krickette which is very healthy and happy she is being trained to be a therapy dog, which it will take awhile but she is learning. We feed her Solid Gold Lamb and rice, were hoping it is a good food. I do not want to make anymore mistakes. I want to also check into giving her fish oil capsuls, she does chew on her feet once in awhile.
Thanks again, I love your newsletters, keep up the good work.
Sandy

Hi there, I have read your report, but wonder if it's already too late for my little Bichon. She is 11 months old and throws up ALL THE TIME. My Mum had her for about four months, but nothing seems to help. I don't know what to do. She is really under weight. Can anyone make any suggestions please.

The information was very informative. I have a really hungry, active Yorkie– I would like to know which foods are the best for him. canned especially. Thanks

Gely @ 5:41 pm

Hey Sharda, thanks for your research!! I find it very useful. I am the owner of a lovely and happy miniature schnauzer. She is one year old but has skin problems due to the hot temperatures in the city. My vet recommended a special food por skin problems that has no meat but only fish and vegetables (smells like fish food). I guess she likes it since she eats all of what i put in her plate.
Well just wanted to say: keep on the research and help us love our pets in a responsible way!! :D

Cindy @ 6:02 pm

I have two bichons and have been playing with their diet for months now. I bought a book written by a veterinarian who supports the holistic approach to feeding dogs as well as supporting certain "healthy" people foods. I tried the raw diet and my dogs didn't like it. The book suggests cooking meat or fish and my dogs seem to prefer that. Their diet is mostly chicken and rice with a squirt of salmon oil and a teaspoon of Missing Link Plus supplement. They also free feed on a kibble I purchase at a dog health food store, tip, the first ingredient is meat, not meat meal, and is grain-free. They also eat carrots, green beans, blueberries, cheese, oatmeal, and just about anything else that is healthy without a red flag on it. I also feed an all meat canned food when I am lazy. Another treat they love is dried salmon or salmon jerky. It's expensive if you get the pure stuff! Anyway, the article gave me some ideas, especially about being consistent. I think I am doing well, my dogs don't itch and have beautiful coats. Honestly, I think this dog nutrition thing will be a life-long endeavor, not just something I figure out in a few months. My vet also supports that if it is healthy for people, it is healthy for dogs, with the exception of the red flag foods! For now I am sticking with the "natural" foods diet.

Beverly Boisen @ 6:08 pm

Hi DEE, Feeding your dog the best nutrition is the best for your dog
If a food has more than 12% fat that is when they gain.

I have read your article which was informative. However, my Vet recommends Science Diet and I have stayed with that. Our dog is very finicky, but I am taking your advice regarding picking up the food after 15 minute.

Helen @ 8:47 pm

My toy poodle adores apple. I don't give her any skin or any seeds or stalk. My last poodle loved apple too and she was a healthy dog until she died at 17 years of age. So Sharda, is apple without the skin and seeds etc all right?

Thanks, Helen

Linda Malek @ 9:21 pm

I am supposed to get a Yorkie puppy sometime in Aug. when it is old enough and all the info. that you have sent has been very helpful, especially this dog food report. I have had several dogs live to be 15 and 17, so guess I must have done something right in their cases.

Moogle @ 9:34 pm

Thank you for the report, it was interesting. However, can you please explain WHY I'm supposed to take away the food after 15 minutes?!? And do I only feed her once a day? Also, you state to replenish with fresh food… I only give her crunchies, they don't go bad do they?

We have a 1 year old Bichon Frisé and she was always eating so fast that she would throw up after, each and every single time. So we started giving her smaller portions throughout the day. She seems fine now.

Lastly, we have 2 apples trees in our yard and she likes to go eat the ones that fall on the ground… does this mean I should not let her out without supervision during apple season?

Thanks a bunch!

Thankyou Sharda for your free Ebook. It is very much
appreciated. I have enjoyed receiving your emails.
" Sam " my miniature poodle now 16 months appears to be
doing very well on Royal Canine. I have found if I
introduce other foods he will more often than not throw up and suffer with loose bowels which is very unpleasant
for him. Chicken is okay in small amounts but not too
often.
I do however look forward to reading your book and taking your tips on board and also your behaviour and
training which remains with Sam full time I think we are
making progress.

Many Thanks for Everything,
Eunice.

Thank you for this great information. Unfornately, I did not know about grapes and fed them to our cocker for years. She had to be put down at age 9 due to a problem which I now believe was a direct result of the grapes.
I have a 2 year old toy yorkie and a new 9 week old pup toy yorkie. The 2 year old eats California Naturals food. The vet says it is a great food. (natural)
The pup came to me on Eukanuba puppy. I am in the process of weaning her over to California Naturals Puppy food. Have you heard of this food? What do you know?
Also, I was not aware that apples were not ok for dogs. Thanks! Sounds like kibble food is the best and safest for our pets!

Geno @ 12:22 pm

I appreciated your info on what my dog should NOT eat, but it would have been much more informative to tell us what dog food in particular they SHOULD be eating.

On another note, my bichon just turned 9 and he has had problems for about the last year. He often holds one paw up in the air and when he gets up, moves, or jumps up to put his front legs on us, he often yelps. We took him to our vet last year and they took x-rays of his front legs - diagnosed him with arthiritis. I just don't think that this is the problem - it seems like it can be a joint, hip, or disc problem. We are going to go to another vet for a second opinion. Any thoughts?

Jean Ruch @ 2:59 pm

I enjoyed the information in the Dog Food Report but I
am still confused about what brand to use. I have a
four month old Yorkie and I am feeding her, Puppy Pro
Plan. I have been leaving her bowl down all day. In
the morning I put 3/4 of a cup in her bowl and she
has never eaten all of it but nibbles all thru the day.
I thought at six months I would change to a twice a day
feeding. Hope I am doing right thing.

I have always understood that pork is bad for dogs, so how is it that there is so many products on the market that are from pork,.. like chews and the ears Etc. After reading about toxic plants, fruit, etc. I have been giving my toy poodle- Avoderm Natural- food which contends avocado meal and avocado oil in their ingredients–Do you know whether this could cause any harm to my little toy poodle Zeus? Or any thing concerning this product? This particular food is promoted as a"Healthy Skin and Coat on the Outside-Healthy Dog food on the Inside".
Now-I'm very concern if the Avocado Oil and Avocado meal might be harmful. Product is surpose to be of optimun nutrition from the hightest quality ingredients. I would appreciate any feedback and again thank you for the invaluable data.

Elaine Hebert @ 11:38 pm

Of course I am still concerned about commercial dog
food. Cooked chicken and veggies, sweet potatoes too,
put it in a blender and my Bichon loved it. However,
he got sick and found it to be a pancreas problem. When
I eliminated the sweet potato and yams, fed kibbles from the vet with cottage cheese, he recovered nicely.
Am now feeding 1 tble spoon of Beneful, cottage cheese,
and kibbles (Iams) Twice a day in small portions.
Exercise three times a week and seems healthy and peppy. Could the yams be the culprit with pancreas

Trust and loved the Report. Elaine

Hi
I have an 18 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is a very fussy eater. I am currently spending a lot of money on trying to find something she likes, but thanks to your report, I also know what to avoid now. Interesting info on the toxins as well, I didn't know about the apples.
My Dolly came from a breeders kennels and hardly ever wore a collar. When I put a collar on her she itches terribly. Is there an ointment or certain fabric you could suggest I use or could this be down to food? Would appreciate your advice.

Thanks

Geneva @ 1:30 pm

The Vet said my little Yorkie had alergies but did not put him on anything–He justs scratches and scrathes especially his paws–What did the vet tell you to do? thanks Gen

Geneva @ 1:36 pm

I also have a Yorkie -About 8 to 10 lbs. How much codliver oil should I give him for the itching? And also is there a special brand or is all codliver oil the same?

Darlene @ 2:18 pm

Thank you very much …it was very helpful about things I didn't now…and with the food scare last year…have a great day…

Geneva @ 2:30 pm

I have also been feeding my Yorkie–Royal Canin–I wonder if it is all that nutritious? I t is very expensive!!

Michael @ 2:30 pm

The information was fantastic. I learned a few things I didn't know. I can't wait for the other reports. THANK YOU

Carole Brown @ 2:45 pm

Thanks for the report, Sharda. I'll be eagerly reading it for tips and info. One thing, I also would like to know about eggs. Years ago I was told it is good for a dog's coat. If so, how often should they be given? I would normally scramble them but is it OK to give then raw? I really don't like that idea.

Also, no one has mentioned treats. I make my own biscuits from a recipe book especially for dog treats and the ingredients are all natural so I know what our two dogs (Swiffer, a Bichon, and Waker, a Whippet)are getting. We limit them to two treats a day. One in the morning and one before they go to bed for the night. Is that too many?

Thanks for all you do to keep our pets healthy.

Leticia Worthington @ 3:38 pm

Thanks so much!

MJ @ 3:41 pm

I had hoped to see a list of brand names that are acceptable to feed yorkies and maltese.

Emily Phillips @ 6:02 pm

I KNOW WHAT MY DOG EATS.
I noticed that you did not discuss feeding raw meat to your dog. I adopted a 4 1/2 yr old papillipn last year. The preavious owner seemed to be alergic to him and her doctor recommeded that she not keep him. She had been feeding him what she considered a good quality kibble and she even gave me some go get me started with him. He had very thin fur on his belly and legs and the skin was very red. He also had a very musty smell about him. I switched him to raw meat which he just loved, and he improved within weeks. I offer the dry kibble just in case he was interested but he never ate any of it.
When I do the meat patties, I use chicken, turkey and a small amount of pork and I add ground vegetables like carrot, brockley and choliflower. I also cook a pot of rice with very little salt and ad some of that. I have vitamin tablets that the vet gave me and I ad one to every patty (that way I don't have to remember to give him one every day)Each pattie is about 4 ounces and he gets one every day He weights 8 lbs (of course I keep them frozen.

He is doing great on this method and his coat is all grown in. This only takes me one afternoon every two months.

Emily Phillips @ 6:08 pm

Just one more thing about feeding raw. I am still nurvous about bones but a lot of people in my pap group buy chicken wings or chicken backs and just let the dog eat it. I know that dogs CAN NOT have cooked chicken bones but the raw ones are O.K. If a dog was living in the wild, they would catch chicken and eat every part, including feathers and if there was some left over they would bury it and dig it up a month later and eat it. Their system can handle that, ours cant. I will never switch from feeding raw.

Ramona @ 6:27 pm

If you find a remedy for the itching, I would be interested. Joey (Lhasa) has alergies and nothing seems to help. I feel sorry for him. Even the things offered by the vet haven't helped.

Ramona @ 6:41 pm

Sharda,
Thanks for your efforts in providing up-to-date
information on dog food. Most of this I had already found after the scare. What I HAVEN'T found is
a sound solution for choosing a commercial dog food. Every one has different opinions and it seems we cannot trust the commercial brands….especially after reading that many (don't know which ones) include dead dogs ground into their food. There is no way, that I can see, to tell who is doing what, so at this point I cook ground turkey or chicken, add mixed veggies and rice and hope Joey, Lhasa Apso, is okay on that..

Pat @ 9:14 pm

Try BFI Powder - I have been using it for over 20 years, I have had large breed and small breed. I presently foster different breeds and itching can be caused from food too. - so you must decide on this. The powder works.

Pat @ 9:27 pm

Sharda, Thank you for sharing your information on foods for dogs. My only regret is that you actually did not cover they different types of dry food or rate it.
Example I would have started with Purina and Beneful dog foods and put them at number 100 - (contains alot of junk) Science Diet and Iams is sliding right down the scale too. In deed people need to read the labels that they are feeding their dogs, only problem is how do we determine the percentage of iron, protien, etc-
Shall we do blood test? - this seems quite extreme - Is there a generalization on different breeds - I have never seen it - Another factor do people know that some dog food companys do not always put on who makes them.
I will give you a example - Natural Balance - actually is Diamond Company - who had many recalls - Today, it is hard for people a good food is overally expensive - prices just seem to go up - Wellness is almost $50.00 for the large bag. Again, thank you for your information.

Elizabeth @ 9:42 pm

Thanks for the great info.
I will print it out and use it to refresh my memory every so often.
You can't be too careful. In our fondness for our pets, sometimes we get on the wrong track e.g. spoil them with unhealthy foods.

Monnie Martin @ 10:22 pm

Sharda, thank you for all the time you spend on all of us Schnauzer lovers. I am the owner of an 8 yr old white Schnauzer who is of course spoiled. I feed Sam Ennova which is 40% protein. I am not sure of the rest of the contents, I know there are lots of vegetables. You are exactly right when you say there is more nutrition. I can tell by Sams elimination the difference. There is much less of it. I haven't had the time to write any questions but there is one issue I will be emailing you about at your site. (when things let up a bit) Again thank you.

Ric Rosonet @ 11:30 pm

Sharda, I have been reviewing the Report. Thanks for the great info, but the more I read, the more curious I became. Am I feeding my dogs a good feed or not? Hoping to find a list (of the best feeds to give my pets) at the end of the report but it was not there. Kind of felt like a tv show that has run for an hour and then says, "TO BE CONTINUED" at the end. Anyway, A list would be great. Thanks, Ric

Joe Campbell @ 12:05 am

Sharda, Thanks for the information. It's the best I have read on dog food.

One of my dogs likes to eat paper towels. I catch him eating them. He is 15 months old.

He also eats our other dog's stools sometimes.
Do you have any good cures available? Joe

SANDY @ 12:21 am

Very helpful and interesting information. Thank you very much for all of your time, effort and research. You are appreciated!!!!! I wish everyone who owned a furbaby could read your information. I have two yorkie boys and would do anything to keep them happy and healthy. One of my guys has pancreatitis. It's a horrible disease! He is under vet care and on a special RX diet. Thanks again for all of your Yorkie information. I hope you will be writing a book on which dog foods are BEST for our furkids. Sandy

Frances Surtees @ 12:25 am

Thanks for the ebook etc Sharda

I found out a few new things not to feed our boy and have passed a few on to others.

We used to have a Sidney Silkey who loved chocolate and at that stage we didn't know about the taboo. He had pancreatitis and was alway pretty sick so I suppose it was our fault. I have learned a lot since then.

We are very careful with our Papillon and try to keep him away from the bad stuff.

Thanks again.

Frances

Beatrice Black @ 4:50 am

Have read your book with interest especially about the grapes being poisonous. I had 3 yorkies living to 16 13 and 12 who loved them with no after effects. I am now looking for a new little pup who will definately not be getting them. Thanks

Bea

janie @ 8:30 am

I have been giving my dog a 7year old miniature schnauzer apples. Is that bad for him? I cut it up so it has no seeds or the stems on it. Please help because he has been having seizers for 3 years (even before he was given the apples)and I don't want to increase the chance of more seizers.

Cathy @ 9:05 am

My three-years-old Cavalier King Charles itches so much sometimes that he occasionally gets red raw…nothing the vet has given him has worked so far..(steroid tablets and anti-biotics for infection from the sores.) I have been giving him Evening Primrose Oil Capsules, plus a daily anti-histamine..he's also on James Wellbeloved Hypo-allergenic kibble…thank you so much for your wonderfully informative Dog Food Report..I used to give my boy raisins until I discovered they were bad for him…if you or anybody else has any suggestions about the itching, I would be very grateful!

Fred @ 10:06 am

Thank you!!! Great and very useful information!!!!!

Juli @ 10:42 am

I have a Westie that is very hard to feed. He doesn't like dry food, he vomits 3-6 times a month at 4 am. He has been to the vet numerous times. He was on a perscription diet for awhile, then absolutely refused to eat it. What is the best food to feed such a pooch?

Loretta Rose @ 10:49 am

Thank you Sharda for all the hard work you do giving us this information. I have a 3 yr old schaunzer who doesn't like any commercial dog food, human food such as steak, pork, ham, burgers. I know these are not good for her, but want to see her eat something. Now she's eating chicken tender treats - can you or anyone give me suggestions - I have thrown away so many different dog foods because she won't eat them - both wet & dry foods. Thank you in advance for your reply! Loretta Rose.

Gerald Brown @ 11:15 am

Sharda,
Thank God we have someone like you looking out for our loved ones. I adopted two Bichons last October when they were only 6 months old. They had no socialization skills and were ornery as can be. But months of attention and care have paid off and now they are two loving pets. Still a little ornery, but a joy to be around. They finally know that they have a home of their own and someone who loves and cares for them.
I really appreciate the ebook on dog foods and will be changing the kind of commercial dog food I've been feeding them. Oh, my Bichons are brother and sister and they are inseperable.
Thank goodness for people like you. You make the World a better place to live in. Yes, you and Doris Day are two women who I really look up to. God bless you.

Karen Griffith @ 4:59 pm

I thought the report was great. I was hoping to see a list of the best dog food to buy. I looked at the one I am using and it didn't give me the Carbs - only protein & fat, so I don't know if it is a good one. A list would help. Thanks

victor @ 6:22 pm

you never touched on the raw meaty bone diet for customers to look at. I use this for my pets and it is the healthiest method of feeding. Pleasr give us some background info about raw food.

Marta @ 6:41 pm

Dear Sharda,
Thank you so much for all the information that you supplied in the report. It is of great help, but I would like to know the name of two or three brands of healthy food that we could buy for our dogs. I have a beautifull Westy. Her name is Leila, she is 4 years old and is the little child of our home. You can imagine how much we love her . I cook almost every day for her. Since I knew Science Diet was no good for dogs I prepare myself the food for My Leila. I grill chicken breasts, and cook rice amd mixed with raw carrots. She likes it very much. I woul like to know the name of those brands of dog's food that we can give to Leila.
Thank you so much for your help!!!
Marta

Tina @ 10:25 pm

I can't even begin to start. I worked in the petfood industry and was there during the "recall". It was a nightmare and I left it because I couln't stand behind my company's product. Not only was quality assurance asleep at the switch, they tried to blame everyone else. The final product should have been tested before it even was sent to market. What disturbed me most though is that the high end products went down right alongside of the "grocery" products. Their ingredients are supposed to be superior, but they were the same tainted ingredients that were used by the lesser quality foods. I couldn't stand behind that and never will. Good luck in your quest. The last I heard they were all sueing each other.

Tina @ 10:38 pm

To Cathy-I've used Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe very successfully. It's a single protien/single carb diet. When my dog had an allergic reaction to her food my vet put her on an elimination diet. Nothing else other then the protien and the carb. No vitamins or treats unless they were from the same sources. It's now four years later and she eats a rotating diet.

Richard N Gunter @ 11:03 pm

Our 5 pound Yorky, "Dallas" has been on Royal Canin for 5 yrs (He is six) and does very well with it. We use the bag with the Yorky on it and he eats 3/8 cup a day. We also allow him one 'Teenie' Greenie a day and a couple of small treats in the bone form about an inch long. He walks about a couple hundred yards or so a day, about a mile for a Lab or bigger dog.

Karren @ 11:07 pm

Hi Shadra,
I too am very interested in the dry dog food debate having banned all forms of commercial dog a long time ago. I would love to read more about whats good & whats not so good in the premium/super premium end of the market, not just what our local vets recommend! I now spend a lot of time making my own dog food which is mixed with (small quantities) of what I think is from the super premium end of the line up currently available in the market place. Consequently I am blessed with a healthy, fit & young scottie.
So please Shadra let us all in on the secret ingredients, what's healthy for our trusted friends & not all the crap the advertising/dog food companies want us to hear.
This information would be most valuable & welcomed by any responsible loving dog owner.
Thankyou in anticipation.
Karren

Jbeezz @ 7:19 am

this is to Juaquina @ 10:38 am about lizards/

I don't believe that the little lizards found in Florida are toxic. My IG catches them everyday (to my distress because they eat mosquitoes and other pests) and chews them. He doesn't swallow them but they don't make him sick in anyway.

I do dread and fear that he will one day encounter a Buffo Frog which will kill him in minutes because he is so small.

I'm hoping that because he does such a vigorous check of the yards perimeter that any frogs will be frightened off. We also don't have any outside water to attract them.

Jbeezz @ 7:32 am

To: Ramona 6;27 RE itching.

I have a Shizh Szu and a Cairn Terrier that had TERRIBLE itching and hot spots caused by food and flea allergies.

I have used Raven Pet Products with a excellent result for clearing hot spots and itching. This is one product that REALLY works.

I also changed their diet to the Chicken and Rice diet and followed up with regular shampooing with Nizoral shampoo.

We use Frontline as well.

Their fur has grown back the sores and hot spots are gone and they have no more itching. They now have soft and silky fur and healthy skin.

Add ingredients to the chicken and rice one at a time to see what she can tolerate.

Beth Wyke @ 10:20 am

It would be nice to have a link in your emails so we can contact you…. However..I am interested in nutritional requirements for an elderly mini poodle, 14 years old. She has pancreatitis attacks occasionally and has to be hospitalized from time to time. I have learned to cope at the first sign of trouble and she is faairly stable now. But I am thinking of making my own dog food for her. I have a 2 year old toy phantom also - would her food be so different that I could not just make a batch of food for the elderly dog and then have a side batch to add to it for the young one?

Marilyn @ 10:24 am

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that will be 2 in August. I have been giving her peeled apples, no core or seeds for over a year. I had no idea they were toxic. She loves them but and I thought they were good for her. I'm surprised.

Jo Ann Mullan @ 11:39 am

I would like to know an organic natural product good for a papillon I am presently feeding natural balance. What is your opinion

Joanie @ 12:43 pm

Hello, In your research for the BEST dog food you might also look at Trilogyonline.com. Dr. Binks has been working to provide natural and high quality dog and cat food. She may be helpful in your research.

It doesn't suprise me that you have had some push back from dog food manufaturing companies. I believe they want to keep the consummer in the dark at the expense of our pets. It is sad but the stock holders are only looking out for the bottom line.

Thanks again for your continued correspondence on the King Charles. I really enjoy reading your emails.

Regards.

I HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT I FEED THE LITTLE ONES, AND THEN I HAVE TO FEED DIFFERENTLY TO THE BIG ONES.MY LITTLE ONES WHICH ARE NOW TWO YEARS OLD AND ALL OF 6 LBS WILL PUT ANYTHING IN THEIR MOUTH, I DO APPRECIATE YOUR HELP ABOUT WHAT IS NOT GOOD FOR THESE DOGS. JUANITA OMAHEN.

Dawn @ 9:21 am

Science Diet is one of THE worst dog foods in my opinion.Alot of breeders back in the 80's quit using it because of small litters, and miscarriages. It causes itchy skin also.Innova no grain dogfood is a good choice,It's what I use along with, grassfed beef that we raise ourselves, natural chicken, and organic herbs.
I just discovered a product that has helped all of us,including the dogs.Scientists have discovered how bad electricity is for us,and earthcalm.com has made EMF protection products. After I pugged it in my older Yorkie started running around like a youngster. Before, she could hardly walk, now she can jump up on the couch. She was on a totally natural diet w/o any dogfood and she didn't improve until I plugged in the earthcalm product.

Dawn @ 9:25 am

You should only use Frontline as a last ditch effort, only use it if fleas are present, and nothing else has worked.Frontline can do terrible damage to our pets.I had a dog almost die after using Frontline

Judy Coffin @ 9:39 am

Thanks for the information about dog foods and poisonous things. Wow! It was very informative. It is well written and easy to read. Please keep up the good work.

My Shadow, a Lhasa Apso, must be closely akin to a bloodhound…or should I say "cat stool hound?" We can be in a pasture of five acres and he will find and try to eat cat feces. He has been that way since he was a puppy. He does not bother with goat feces or other dogs' feces. He is not hungry. I have him on Prescription Diet Food, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Thyroid medicine and Antihistimines and he still tries to find cat feces. I won't let him in the fenced backyard where the cats live because of it. He is very allergic, very itchy and gets a medicated bath once a week. His fur is clipped puppy style. What is your take on this?

Your book alluded to dog feces…but not cat feces. I try to keep Shadow safe. He is his own worst enemy.

Thanks again for the easily accessed e-book.

There were some things in your report that I was already aware of. But there was quite a listing of plants & other things that I was not aware of & found to be very helpful & interesting.

In addition to our adorable Yorkie, we also have an older dog, a cute cock-a-poo & several amazing cats. Because we are always concerned about the well being of all of our precious pets, we do not keep any live plants indoors. We are also very careful with the pet food they are all fed.

Thank you very much for such an informative & very helpful report.

We have taken her to the vet and have had numerous tests run on her with no solutions. Soooo, we are turning to you for suggestions. She has been prescribe Ukanuba PF by the vet. Her vomiting has subsided but not to any great satisfaction. Ant suggestions. We are so glad your back with us. Art K

Linda Smith @ 5:22 pm

Thanks for the info.

I have 2 male mini-schnauzers, both of which have allergies. The vet recommended Science-Diet. The younger one came from Rescue - he was on Science-Diet and is on a med twice a day for the allergies as well as the other one (a different kind of med) I switched to the Nature's Recipe Venison as the Mgr at Pet-Smart said that was the best for allergies. I asked the Vet and was told to keep them on that diet. I do give treats with carrots, apples, blueberries, made by Natural Choice. I'd love to find a food with everything they needed without having to take meds.
One is 12 and one is 6 (going on 2) Any recommendations? THANKS

Doreen @ 5:38 pm

Thanks so much for your free booklet on dog food products. My bichon Precious is 1 1/2 years old and she eats everything and I mean everything, I'm glad to find out some of the things she shouldn't be fed such as apples, raisins, grapes and onions. I've always known that chocolate was a no, no. I feed her Hill's presciption w/d and she gets along great on it. I was wondering if peanut butter is of any harm to a bichon as she totally loves this on her toast.

Jennifer @ 6:04 pm

I could hardly wait for my report to print–I was reading as I was printing. This information is great! I do think my pet got into the trash recently because he experienced the tremors that you mentioned and I stayed awake ALLLLL night with him like this. Took him to the vet the next day and she said he was fine–but he wasn't–something was wrong and after a few days he was fine—needless to say, we now have a new vet also! The report is great and helpful–I have a lot of plants around and it is so helpful to have this information. Thank you again.

Linda @ 12:14 am

Great information thank you. I've never fed my poodle any processed food until recently. A vet told me once that the longest lived dog in his practice never ate a thing from a can. Could have been coincidence but very interesting. Now she gets a little Hill's in her breakfast. Most vets seem to recommend it but are they being brainwashed by the companies? Am still not sure if I am doing the right thing.

I have 2 4yr old male pugs,Gus and Max. Max has a very itchy body that does not seem to go away. I have tried different foods, medication, vitamins, and keeping him away from treats. All this with the veterinarian's telling me what to do. Now I just put little sock booties on his feet to keep him from bring blood by his scratching. The booties don't keep him from scratching, just the damage. I am on my own with this because the cost was becoming too much. I don't like the idea of drugs…..I need HELP. Please. Thank you. Brenda

Sharda, Thanks so much for the dog food report. I have a 6 month old lab named Marley and a 7 year old Pom Poo named Fancy. They get treated as if they were a child, not a dogs. I never knew that there was so much difference in the dog foods, and that canned was not good as their main source of food. Thank goodness that I have never used canned food. I have watched the protein level in their treats though. Some are out of sight with high levels. I was amazed at some of the things that were poisonous for dogs. Thank you so much for all the info that you shoot out to us.

Patricia Seacrist @ 2:38 pm

I may have over looked this but - I did not see "sugested" not "recommended" but suggested dry baged dog foods that may be a good choice for dog owners to try. I feed NUTRO dog and cat and have been very very pleased with results. I was feeding for a "grocery store" food prior to Nuto.

Linda Malek @ 8:29 pm

I would like to know what kind of dog food you feed your dog or dogs.

LouAnna @ 10:55 pm

Sharda, you are awesome… thank you for all that wonderful information that you worked very hard on! It was a very nice gift, to give away free of charge, for the value of it is priceless! I learned alot of information, regarding my dogs health, that I really needed to know. I have this problem of giving in to my dog, when it comes to feeding her table scraps. But since I have read the dog food report, that you put together, that stated how table scraps have toxins in it that is harmful to your pets, I am not giving in anymore.
Thank you,
sincerely,
your friend,

Can you stand another dog food story? We lost our Schnauzer of 13 years to the bad dog food which we thought was a really good brand. We have a rescue Schnauzer now who is 7 and because of neglect from the previous owner we have had to have all his upper teeth extracted so feeding him is a bit of an issue. I am mixing what I hope is a good quality canned food from a pet store with Royal Canin Schnauzer food because supposedly the kibbles break up easier than other kibble dog food. I hope you come out with a good food list and not let the companies intimidate you. If they were doing everything right they wouldn't get so huffy. Paula Begouin has been doing this with the cosmetics industry for years, naming names and listing good and bad. Rock on!

Victoria @ 2:35 pm

I have a 6 year old toy poodle, Ali. He was on Science Diet's Nature's Best Dog Food for 5 years and they took that certain brand off the market. He loved the peas and carrots in it and I've been unable to find another food similar other than Kibbles and Bits and Beneful. Arethess brands safe? The vet prescribed a brand but he won't touch it. About a year ago he developed a kidney stone, had it removed and I don't want that to happen again. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Beth @ 6:11 pm

Hello Sharda,

Thank you for your faithful service in educating us about pekingese dogs. My precious dog Mady, a pekingese, is the love of my life and I want the best for her. This includes the best food. I look forward to reading the dog food report, in hopes of finally finding a healthy well-balanced dog food for her. I was ordering her food online, but it became too expensive. So, now I buy her organic dry dog food, but she does not like it. I hope your dog food report helps Mady and I find the right food.

Thanks Sharda.

I am interested in your recipe- can you share it? My dog has gone off dried food and I am feeding her with a mixture of chicken, lean mince, pasta. She loves it! She is a border terrier 13 years old. I used to include lambs liver and heart but she "ponged" something awful! Please send me your recipe. Thank you

does it have by-products or chicken -by-products(which are ground chicken heads, feet & intestines), whole ground yellow corn/ These are fillers - non digestiable - won't hurt but you are buying food your d og can not digest.

Hi,
I found it most interesting and helpful as far as I got, before my wife took it, so kope to finish it later.
the trouble I have is that one of my two dogs is both fussy and shows no interest at all in food.
he is a Basset and I need to fill him out as he is a beautiful dog but has a waist line.
Cheers and thanks for now
Roy

Very informative. I was surprised about the garlic!I am really interested to find out what really is in dry dog food. 2 of my labs are picky eaters and I try to give them the best, but am I? It will be interesting to find out.

Terry @ 10:07 am

Hi Sharda:

Thank you so much for the helpful information. We love our 2 puppies and want the best for them. We are in the process of changing dog foods and I would love to know if the new food is one of your selections. I am considering buying your books to find out. Of course the free info is fantastic!

Thanks,

Terry

Terry @ 11:10 am

Is there any way you can tell me if "Canidae" Dog Food is a safe healthy food for my puppies? Because we are in the changeover mode from Iams (which is what the breeder had them on and we continued it) They are about 6 1/2 months now.
We were toying with two brands, "Canidae" and "Artemis" (Artemis is way too expensive). My husband made the choice, but I would have gone with it.

Thanks,
Terry

Wondering what website has the dog foods that are good for the dogs and the ones bad for dogs. Thanks for the good information.

Jane @ 2:01 am

Hi Elaine,
Did you ever get any responses to your question abt a connection between yams/sweet potato and pancreas problems with your dog?
I lost my beloved dog to pancreatitis. She was a good eater and never refused anything, I always kept it healthy but often wonder if I gave her something toxic over the years……..
cheers

I HAVE PURCHASED THE HONEST KITCHEN FOOD FOR BOTH MY PUG AND CATS. THE CATS WENT THREE DAYS, ON STIKE I GUESS, WITHOUT EATING BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED IN THEIR FOOD AND THE PUG ATE IT ONCE AND WENT TWO DAYS ON A NO EATING IT STRIKE.
I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET THEM TO EAT IT. YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS HOW TO ACCOMPLISH THAT? I EVEN TRIED MIXING IT WITH OTHER THINGS ESPECIALLY WITH THEIR OWN FOOD BUT IT DIDNT WORK. HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED BECAUSE I STILL HAVE LOTS OF FOOD LEFT. PLUS IT IS A PERFECT FOOD TO HAVE WHEN WE HAVE TO HUNKER DOWN IN THE CELLAR BECAUSE OF TORNADOS… THANKS A BUNCH MAXINE

Hi,
I am no expert, but I also have a cavy. I have noticed that she scratches a lot when she has her halter on. When I remove it, she doesn't scratch. Must be something in it. Mine is 6 1/2 months old. What a doll these dogs are. She is my first cavy. I just love her.

I have a 6 month old West Highland Terrior. He is awesome. My vet just told me about the sugar free gum with Xiltol. He said it was very toxic and could kill a toy dog right away. We had our westie on Maxx, now he is on INNOVA and doing great. We found this food at Dog Train! Thanks for bringing up the Xiltol.
